The city of Bergamo has 2 centres; Città Alta and Città Bassa. Città Alta is the medieval centre, situated on a hill-top, surrounded by 17th century defensive walls. Città Bassa is the lower city, developed in the 20th century.
Città Alta has many historic sights, including:
- Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary): Building started in 1137 was completed by the construction of the bell tower in 1459.
- Cappella Colleoni (Colleoni chapel): A showcase of Renaissance architecture and decoration art.
- Palazzo della Ragione: Originally built in the 12th century, it was rebuilt in the 16th century and displays original features from both time periods.
